Pak’s first Miss Bikini breaks all barriers

Mariyah Moten, a 22-year-old US-based Pakistani, is being billed as “Pakistan’s first Miss Bikini”. This after she won the title of Best in Media Category at the Miss Bikini Universe 2006 pageant in China on August 26.
In an email interview with TOI , Mariyah talks about the ‘amusing’ hardliners who make ’some noise’, but can’t really do anything to prevent people from projecting Pakistan as a “moderate place”.
Talking about actress Meera, she says that while her kiss in a Bollywood movie may have kicked up a fuss, it has actually made the Pakistani star quite popular in her home country, which has also taken part in other beauty pageants. Yet, the fiesty woman says she wants to return to Pakistan and try her luck in Lollywood.
Q. How do you react to being called Pakistan’s first Miss Bikini?
A. I have broken all barriers, and in the coming years there will be other Pakistani contestants, who will carry this title. My intention was to project Pakistan is a very modern way.
Q. Pakistan has never had a beauty pageant. How do you think people back home have reacted to you parading in a bikini?
A. Actually, Pakistan has participated in several beauty pageants. All the information on Pakistan’s participation is on www.misspakistanworld.com . Hardliners are basically people who try to impose their thoughts on others. We are not affected by people like them. We believe Pakistan is a country that is made up of moderate Muslims like myself. And yes, some people may not like the idea of a Pakistani girl in a bikini, but alas, we have done it and there is no way they can change anything about it.
Q. Pakistani actress Meera had to face the wrath of conservatives in Pakistan after she wore skimpy clothes and did a kissing scene in a Hindi film.
A. See, fundamentalists are everywhere. Even when the Miss World pageant took place in India, there were fundamentalists as well as feminists stalling it. Meera is doing very well, she is now more in demand, and has more people lining up to see her in Pakistan. She is very happy where she is, and conservatives could do nothing to her. This is simply noise made by people who have nothing better to do… it’s actually amusing how they are always so ready to react.
Q. Would you be interested in acting in movies, especially Hindi films?
A. Well, I would like to complete my education first (she is a management student). I am getting a lot of offers from Lollywood, and I may go to Pakistan this year to check these out. I am not sure how well it will go, but at the moment acting interests me.
Q. What do you intend to do now?
A. As I said before, my main aim is to project Pakistan to the world as a moderate place. I have succeeded in educating many girls who compete in these pageants about Pakistan, and cleared a lot of doubts people have about the country. I will do this in the coming year as well.

well we dont like our women go semi naked in public. ours is a conservative country, where majority of women dress modestly, not revealing there bodies.the fact that by showing body reflects how modern a country is does not go well with me personally. i think its ones thoughts and achievements in the field of science and technology which can truely explain how modern the country of these people is.
as regards to the participation of mariyah in miss bikini contest, so its her personal decission, and she is free to do that, but it does not necessarily reflect the views of pakistani nation as a whole. though i will not approve of it, but at the same time will not object to the individual liberty of mariya. i can only request her not to use pakistani flag while participating in such shows.
thanks

Though Pakistan has quite a few conservatives on its land , but there are also many liberal/ westernised people over here . Both of these groups haVE CO EXISTED for the past 60 years of our independence and have been allowed to live according to their political /social values with complete independence.
As a nation our pride and honour is the peace ful co existance of both these cultures , where both have the liberty to make their voice felt and view heard .
I wish Mariyah Moten all the luck she needs in her career, education and life . And also wish her the best in her efforts of promoting Pakistan’s Soft image .
Thankyou

culture and values are determined by beliefs prevailant at a particular place. We in Pakistan believe in strict codes of honor derived from Islam. No true muslim would approve of stripping in public. What Mriyah did in China was her own choice to do but that action is not subsribed to or owned by a huge majority of Pakistan and the muslim world. She could either be a muslim true to faith or a total wayward trampling on her own identity. Also, who allowed her to display Pakistani flag? what she did was out of her own will and want and therefore was not representing Pakistan!!!!

The role of women in Islam has been misunderstood in the West because of general ignorance of the Islamic system and way of life as a whole, and because of the distortions of the media.
The present time of widespread rethinking of the role and rights of women is perhaps the appropriate time to look with fresh eyes at the Islamic point of view, which has contributed to the formation of stable societies in both sophisticated and underdeveloped peoples in vast areas of the world over the past fourteen centuries, which has retained the continuity of its principles, and from which the Western world may have something to learn.
wen in the west let the oders learn our culture, our religion.. rather then we following deir footsteps!!

I believe every person has the right to live and express himself/herself as he/she feels best. Ours is definitely a conservative society but does not mean that one group of people gets the right to suppress another group. The whole idea of Democracy is to respect individual volition. If we cant do that, then we are not a Democratic society. All of us watch the indian movies and admire their film stars.
Why do we appreciate Indian models and actresses and when one of our own girls is doing the same then all of a sudden we turn conservative and start calling ourselves religious people who should not allow this. There is no compulsion in any religion. Religion should only be kept one’s personal matter, it is one’s relationship with God and no one should try to interfere with anyone’s personal matters. This also shows that our society needs to learn the basics of tolerance.

Pakistan was founded by a very modern and educated person, Jinnah, it was not founded by some crazy Mullah. And religion is a personal thing, leave it out of culture. The name Pakistan does not only belong to the Gov. it belongs to all people who are from that country or are related to that country. The goverment should not/cannot enforce such acts of freedom. Besides that Pakistan is in real need of soft image and such activities should be promoted and the will be because the ration al & educated people support it. Pakistan Zindabad.

Its not her, but there are other elements i.e RAW, MOSAD, who wants to destabilize Pakistan by attacking their cultural values as well religion, ISLAM.

Shame on you even if you are a non muslim Pakistani.whatever your religion is do not forget the cultural values of your native country. After this heinous crime we Pakistanis simply disown you as our country women.Make a public apology for demaging the reputation of Pakistan and harming the sanctity of Pakistani flag.
Beg forgiveness from Almighty Allah.Remember I am giving you this piece of advice even though I am not at all an ‘extremist’Mullah.

Everyone! I totally agree with Zafar… She should not represent Pakistan and neither should she call her self Muslim.. Since when does Islam allows us to be half naked.. NEVER did NEVER will!!! I live in US and i was raised here but that doesn’t mean its okay for me to go out and take part in bikini contests!! I wear Ababya which half of the people in Pakistan don’t.. it really don’t matter where your born or rasied.. itz partly your parents fault too…. they must not have raised her right or taught her about islam and our religion!! Shame on you mariyah!! Ask Allah for forgiveness before its too late.. instead of taking part in these contest.. fisnish up your studies and learn about your religion..

Truly you are representing the Islamic ideology well outside Pakistan. I 100% agree with your view point about Islam & Muslims living in the western countries. Islam doesn’t teach us this type of obscenity, nor we should follow Islamic teachings only living in Islamic countries and if we live in others countries we should adopt their culture instead our one. SHAM SHAM to you MARIA for hurting the feelings of Muslims

WORTH READING!
SHE WOULD HAVE GAINED MORE fame IF SHE WOULD HAVE TRIED TO USA AS HER NATIVE COUNTRY (which she is a citizen of).
but the problem is that one can find a CASHIER girl at WALMart (in US) far far beautyful than her or any other ugly participants.
>
Looked liked the contest was comprised of third class women from lower class.
No country would allow using the name because of lack of competency.
Comment by syedazad — September 30, 2006 #
Now why PAKISTAN used is the reason as USA mgmt would have LAUGHED at her proposal….
Pakistan has not much intact foreign affairs office and lack of grasp on international public events, THIS IS WHY THAT WOMEN (REALLY A WOMEN) KNOWINGLY used THE NAME.
PAKISTANIS SHOULD NOT FEEL ANYTHING AS THIS WAS NEVER BEEN SUPPORTEDBY PAKISTAN. All should feel relax and do not take it in any way. Good Luck to all.
Comment by syedazad — September 30, 2006 #
shes free to do whtever she wanted to do. but she should hav asked the govt. of pakistan whether she can use the name of pakistan and take some pics with the flag of pakistan. After all there is a govt. in pakistan and approval & disapproval is all depend on Govt.’s decision.

Well she is a Canadian.. i think Paksiatni official should contact the pageants organisers that on what basis “these type” fo girls/women using the name of Paksitan. As far as Islam is concern, everyone give the comments on this great religion the way they want to…dont judge the religion by its followers. Now for Maria ” you really had made the good decision to leave Pakistan and Islam, and i think someone had really bucked you up to “promote” your religion (not Islam but “Inlightned Moderate Islam (IMI)”, the religion formed by West).in urdu there is a beautiful quote CHAR DIN KEE CHANDNEE PHIR ANDHEREE RAAT.

Personally, I don’t care if she dances naked in front of mobs, but what I think is disgraceful is her total disrespect for our nation’s flag. The flag represents Islam. It is an emblem of purity; chand and tara; she has no regard for it. How dare she use it to represent our country? Who gave her that right? She represents decadence and our people’s tendency to incline towards the worst of the West. Even the girls from good, Christian families don’t expose their bodies like that. Moral values are uniform throughout all religions. No religion approves of any man or woman exposing himself. She is a soft porn star and I demand our goverment to command her to detach herself from our flag. Once she’s done that she can be a pron star and it won’t bother me.

Do men parade naked to prove they are liberated? it is the western media campaign to assign this type of shows to liberation of women and our so called liberated women just follow. it is a nauseating effort of the west to break the islamic principles of a just society. she doesnt represent pakistan, nor islam nor a liberated woman. she is more of a sex symbol and no more.

Erm everyone says Pakistan is an Islamic country, but do we have laws which categorically prohibit something like this even at lets say a Pakistani beach. Does the police have the right to ask each and every guy and girl out together for their nikahnama. Pakistan was founded for the muslims, does that mean we create an atmosphere in which Islamic values can be practiced or does that mean we impose this on the people like the Taliban. Where do we draw the line?
Also looking at the state of the madarasahs and what the mullahs seem to say from the pulpits even in the mosques in karachi, I personally am of the view that we need to keep the religion out of our laws for the better good of the country and thereby reduce the danger of talibanization of our society.
Coming back to what mariyah did, its her own personal choice if she wants to wear a bikini. Its altogether a different matter if she should display the Pakistani flag like that. She is an americna national as well but I doubt she would have made it to this competition using that identity.
Also corruption is rampant in our society, who hasnt here never given a bribe to the pakistani traffic police? Who is to say that wearing a bikini is worse then that. I just think it would be a more efficient use of all our time if it was spent on matters other then what someone is wearing.

WHAT IS ALL THE FUSS ABOUT? FIRST THINGS FIRST IF SHES A MUSLIM THEN IM SANTA CLAUS,THERE IS NO WAY A TRUE MUSLIM WOULD STRIP OFF IN PUBLIC.SECONDLY PARADING YOUR TITS AND ARSE FOR PUBLICITY SEEMS A BIT EXTREME TO ME SO ONLY GOD KNOWS HOW IT WILL SHOW PAKISTAN AS BEING A MODERATE PLACE AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST HAS NOBODY TOLD THE DAFT COW THAT MOST OF THE ACTRESSES IN LOLLYWOOD ARE EX PROSTITUTES.SO BASICALLY SHE IS NOT REPRESENTING PAKISTAN BUT ACTUALLY HER OWN SELFISH INTERESTS WHICH HOPEFULLY(FAT CHANCE)SHE WILL REALISE!!!

hmm She does have a nice cool body, why not show it to others hehehe.
Not that I am totally out going paki person, but its her free will and we shouldnt be crying over that. I am hell sure she would be more sensible person to talk to rather than any taliban or pro-alqaeeda dude.
Live and let live dudes.

I don’t agree with it but a your all a bunch of hypocrites- speaking of islam then calling her her death and such nasty names which is not allowed in islam either !!
don’t like it then don’t look why are you looking ?? she’s not hurting you personally in anyway .
words from your mouth are more hurtful calling her bitch, slut, whore etc and talking of cutting her up and killing her, bashing her upbringing which you know nothing about is more harmful to islam than giving a bad and hateful image than simply for wearing a bikini.Religion is personal between her and allah none of your business this is how you deal with a fellow muslimah ? your parents must be so proud of you to hear you talk with such disrespect about a muslim woman yes what she did is disrespectful but the way you people responded is far worse.Shame on you !!!
just because you are more conservative doesn’t mean you can force your values on her remember islam says THERE IS NO COMPULSION IN RELIGION !!

Thinking alot on this matter but still not sure what to say about this. But i have very clear mind when I see such mislead people.People like Mariyah Moten believe they are very broad minded and moderate and prove to be very courageous. Yes they are bold but how better it would have been if they could do such deeds which’d please their own society(Pakistani Society) and not the international society. In a society it is of great importance when people have good contact with each other and where there people don’t break the rules and laws of the society.A society which is based on the universal laws (the laws made by the Creator) succeeds and nurtures. And when such people dare to break the rules and laws, society buckles and the course of it changes to some other direction which might lead to total disaster and collapse.
I definitely am a moderate muslim but I can’t appreciate these types of deeds either.
Atleast I can’t support and appreciate such people who create such hurdles and breakage in our society. These “ultra-modern people” has definitely damaged our society.
May Allah keep our society safe and peaceful….

I dont know what is proved over here by parading semi nude in front of the public? I dont think so modernism comes from parading semi nude in fact I believe we’re just getting influenced by western culture rather appreciating our own culture. I believe western people are more modern than you Maria because they think whatever their culture is they stick around and promote them as modern but we the people of subcontinent dont know the true essence of our own culture. Modernism comes from ideas and not parading in semi nude garments!!!!!

nobody has the right to show his/her own opinion under the stamp of other nationals or country
if v allowed every body to use our countrys name then v shall allow the killers n smuglers to use it too
like smugler pakistani or killer pakistani or jeb katra pakistani
wat a nation has its own values n culture and if any body try to embose his filthy thoughts on us v cant let him/her do
v r a nation v have our own values n v dont need to flow in the way of others that v need to do these types of bloody competitions
this is the work only done by begherats n dhayyoose.

What a shame, for people of pakistan, for me it only shows how low self respect and insecure this person is to be dressed as something that pakistanis are not.If you want to show respect for your contry dress with typical clothes, been naked doesn’t mean been open mind.I’m not from pakistan rather i’m from a really open country and will never show skin ,if u don’t know porn people uses this poses.SHAME ON U.

every women should participate in the beauty contents. it does means tat women wears bikini or fully naked, it shows that women are proud of the country. i means that women can do everything if they want to do.
2day life has chqange, and people r bcoming modern and superior.
so y do women r discriminating especially islamic countries? y do women disallow to participate in any social activities?
my opion is islamic women should particate in beaty consent ie.if women wear bikini of maked,is not a big deal. i dont believe haram. i believe mashallash. in india women like zeenath aman she was very sexy in bollywood film, she was wearing bikini, so y didnt musim protect tat she is going against islam? 2day people respect her and talented womwn.(zeenath anam).
so please dont criticised to musim women. let us support them and let they sould be proud of the country. long life muslim women.
i pray 2 god that pakistani and india women should live 2ther n live with happy life.
